About India's Tap Water
Is India's tap
water safe?
In Punjab, India, about 27% of water tests in 2024 failed safety standards, making it unsafe to drink (The Times of India, 2024).
Dirty tap water infects people with illnesses, which kill around 444,000 children under five each year (World Health Organization WHO, 2024).
Water tests show roughly one in five tests have too much waste in it that can cause serious illnesses (Mongabay-India, 2024).
While it is true that some regions like Mysore and Chandigarh have reduced pollution of their tap water, in March 2025 a survey found that only 6 % of urban homes get safe tap water directly. This means most households in India still cannot drink straight from the tap without filtration or boiling (business standard, 2025).
